Troubleshoot:Backup program will not start

Backup program will not start

I'm using Windows 7 64bit.
When I go through control panel to configure a backup I click on "set up backup" and nothing happens at all.
I do notice a small icon appear briefly on the task bar, but it goes away immediately.
The icon looks like a Windows unassociated
file icon.
Any clues to resolve this issue? Thanks....

Hi C10chevy,

1.
Have you logged in as a standard user on the computer?
2.
Where are you trying to backup like is it an external hard disk?

I would suggest you to perform a clean boot and check in the clean boot state if you face the same issue -
To perform the clean boot follow the step 1 mentioned in the below article and then try to do set up the backup in this clean boot state -
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue gets resolved check which non-Microsoft service is causing the problem; referring to the article and following other steps.
After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:
1.
Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2.
On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
3.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
You may also refer to the below links for assistance on the issue -

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • Open Run command as previously described
  • Type MSConfig
  • Click on Boot tab
  • Tick Safe boot in Boot option
  • Select Network
  • Click Apply and OK
  • Reboot your system

Your system will boot in Safe mode with Networking. You may now try and open Windows Store and should not see any errors.
